The Civil War Years

Learn and Explore

The Civil War years at Fort Larned were at best a holding pattern in terms of military action. With the national government's attention focused on the war in the east, the frontier outposts were manned mainly with volunteer state and militia troops. Their job consisted mostly of keeping the Indians in check, and while they were mostly successful, because they were made up of troops from the local area, their interests were often local in nature.
