Nolan Army Files

Nicholas Nolan commanded Co. A, 10th U.S. Cavalry during their time at Fort Larned. The 10th Cavalry was one of two units of African American enlisted men created by Congress after the Civil War. Originally from Ireland, Nolan enlisted in the U.S. Army shortly after immigrating to this country. He rose through the ranks, eventually getting an officer's commission during the Civil War. Although initially skeptical of the fighting ability of the men under his command, he was eventually impressed with the dedication, hard work and devotion to duty shown by his men.
