The month of May in Georgia not only signifies that the heat of summer is just around the corner, or that bug season is in full swing, but it also celebrates the archaeological history of the state. Fort Frederica National Monument is one of the premier archaeological sites along the coast of Georgia. The remains of the 1736 British town and fort, built to defend the coastline and northern colonies against attack by the Spanish who were headquartered in Florida, tells the story of British colonists and soldiers who helped shape our country’s history. The theme for the state’s Archaeology Month is Conflict: Georgia Expanding Boundaries from 1733-1833.

Fort Frederica’s park ranger staff will be presenting two special programs relating to Archaeology Month. The first program will be an exhibit highlighting the work of local fourth graders who have participated in the park’s award-winning historical archaeology program, which is presented in partnership with the Glynn County School System. The art exhibit will be on display for the month of May in the visitor center at Fort Frederica. The second program will be a hands-on archaeology program. It is designed for students and families who have not been able to participate in the fourth grade school program. Participants will learn about all aspects of archaeology including research, excavation and laboratory work. The program will be held on Saturday May 5, 2007 from 1:00- 4:00 pm. There is a limit of 25 people for this program so please call [phone] and ask for the Visitor Center to make a reservation.

There is walking, bending and stooping involved with the program. In case of inclement weather, the program will be postponed and rescheduled. The program is designed for people age 8 years old and over. Regular park admission fees apply for both of these programs. The entrance fee is $3.00 per person age 16 and over. Children age 15 and under are free.
