History Comes to Life at Fort Frederica Festival - March 26th

286^th Anniversary of the Founding of Frederica 

(St. Simons Island, GA) Fort Frederica National Monument, the Friends Group of Fort Frederica, and the Fort Frederica Association, are pleased to announce the details of the 2022 Fort Frederica Colonial Days Festival which occurs on March 26, 2022. This annual event commemorates the founding of Frederica in 1736 and provides a wonderful opportunity for Frederica’s visitors to actively participate in the history of the site and of colonial Georgia. Admission is free for the festival which begins at 11 AM and concludes at 3:00 PM. 

“We welcome the community to come and experience the history in their own backyard. The festival is a great way to learn about Georgia’s early history and have fun while doing it,” says Deputy Superintendent Steve Theus.  

Activities throughout the day will immerse visitors into the history of Frederica and the struggle for empire between Great Britain and Spain in the 18^th Century. Volunteers from throughout the region will help the National Park Service bring this history to life. From Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida Spanish soldiers will explain the Spanish side of the story while they demonstrate firing a black powder cannon. Soldiers from Ft. Frederica’s volunteer regiment will portray the 42^nd Regiment of Foot and explain their role in determining the future of the Colony of Georgia. From Darien, GA Scottish Highlanders in all their kilted glory will be on-site. Volunteers from the community and from Fort Frederica’s own volunteer program will provide hands-on programs throughout the day.  

Colonial children’s games and colonial cricket will also be available.

Masking requirements will vary by park based on local conditions; however masks are still required on all forms of enclosed public transportation. In areas CDC identifies as high COVID-19 community level, masks are required for everyone in all NPS buildings regardless of vaccination status. In most low and medium COVID-19 community level areas, masks are optional, but visitors should follow signs and instructions from park staff and volunteers. Visitors and employees are always welcome to wear a mask if it makes them more comfortable.
