The park staff at Fort Frederica National Monument is now accepting reservations for the 2008 Hands-On-History Camp. The camp will be held from Monday June 23, 2008 to Wednesday June 25th, 2008 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. It is limited to 20 participants. Please call the park visitor center at (912) 638-3639 to sign up for this educational and fun day camp. The camp is free and is open to children in fifth through seventh grades.

The theme of this year’s camp is History is All Around Us.  Through the use of primary resources, artifacts, crafts and games, participants will explore Fort Frederica and learn about why history is important! They will also learn about the National Park Service and its important role in protecting our Nation’s treasures.

Fort Frederica National Monument is located at 6515 Frederica Road on St. Simons Island. It is an archaeological site that tells the story of a 1736 British town and fort founded by General James Oglethorpe and a group of British colonists. Its main job was to protect the coastline and Northern colonies against the Spanish who were headquartered at St. Augustine, Florida. In 1742, there were two battles fought on St. Simons Island between the Spanish and British. The Spanish were defeated. This ended the Spanish empire’s dreams of colonizing the New World, and allowed for the British to colonize what is now Georgia.
