FARMINGTON, PA – The National Park Service is happy to announce the spring opening dates for visitor facilities at the five National Parks in Western Pennsylvania. Superintendent Jeff Reinbold encourages visitors to spend a day in one or more of the five Parks; "spring is a great time to visit one of our historic sites or go for a walk on the 31 miles of walkways and trails in the five Parks."
Beginning April 1, Flight 93 National Memorial will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with last entry to the Memorial at 6:30 p.m. Due to ongoing construction projects visitors are cautioned to be aware of construction vehicles on park roads.
Beginning April 4, the visiting hours of the Historic Gallatin House, located at Friendship Hill National Historic Site in Point Marion, will expand to Friday through Monday, from 9:00 to 5:00 p.m. The house will be open seven days per week, beginning May 11. The park grounds remain open sunrise to sunset year-round for visitors who enjoy walking in the park.
At Fort Necessity National Battlefield in Farmington, The Mount Washington Tavern – a museum focusing on life along the Historic National Road – and the park Picnic Area will open April 15, 2014. Jumonville Glen, located about six miles from Fort Necessity on Jumonville Road, will open May 1. The Fort Necessity/National Road Interpretive and Education Center remains open seven days a week from 9:00 to 5:00 p.m.
At Allegheny Portage Railroad NHS and Johnstown Flood National Memorial, both parks are open from sunrise to sunset and the Park's visitor's facilities are open from 9:00 to 5:00 daily. This Saturday, March 22, to commemorate the 180th Anniversary of the opening Allegheny Portage Railroad, Park Rangers will conduct a guided hike along the trace in the Summit Area. To reserve your space on the hike call 814-886-6150.
