National Park Service announces programs honoring Flight 93 passengers and crew on 25th remembrance of September 11, 2001

SHANKSVILLE, PA – The public is invited to join the National Park Service to honor and remember the 40 heroes of Flight 93 on the 25th observance of September 11, 2001. A full day of programs, including a morning observance and an afternoon ceremony, will be held at the Memorial Plaza near the Wall of Names. 

“We gather together in a spirit of remembrance and reflection to honor the heroes of Flight 93, recall the moments that changed our nation, and renew our commitment to carry their legacy forward with courage and compassion,” said Stephen M. Clark, superintendent of Flight 93 National Memorial.

“As the next generation, we have the responsibility to carry their courage forward. We are shaped by their sacrifice and honor them by choosing courage and kindness in our own lives," said Emma Mumau, teacher and former memorial Education and Outreach Fellow. 

September 11 Morning Observance – 8:30 a.m.

• Wreath layings near the visitor center to mark the time of each attack in New York City, Arlington, and Shanksville.
• Musical performance by the Pennsylvania Quintet.  
• Reading of the names of Flight 93 passengers and crew members.
• Ringing of the Bells of Remembrance.
• The observance will be broadcast live on the memorial’s YouTube page. 

September 11 Afternoon Ceremony – 1 p.m.

• Remarks and keynote speakers.
• Youth-based musical performances. 
• Wreath laying ceremony at the Wall of Names.
• This ceremony will be broadcast live on the memorial’s YouTube page. 

September 12 Luminaria Ceremony – 7:30 p.m.

• Procession of 40 candle lanterns to the Wall of Names, hosted in partnership with the Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial.
• The memorial will remain open until the conclusion of the luminaria (approximately 9 p.m.). 

The memorial will open at 7 a.m. on September 11 and visitors are encouraged to arrive one hour before the observance to allow ample time to park and shuttle to the event site. All visitors will park in designated lots and shuttle to and from the event site. The ceremony will be held in a field, and visitors are encouraged to wear footwear that is appropriate for walking on mown grass and uneven ground. Accessible buses will be available to accommodate wheelchairs. ADA seating will be available for the public.  

The visitor center will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on September 11 and 12. All programs are free and open to the public and will be held rain or shine. In the event of severe weather, the program time and location are subject to change. Media are encouraged to take advantage of the live stream or request an event pass to attend in person. 

For a fourth year, the National Park Service and the Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial offer ‘Teach to Remember 9/11.’ These virtual education programs are available September 3-11. Classrooms can join the ceremony via livestream. Educators can register for the virtual event now.
