Earthscope is a national research project that will use the entire United States as a laboratory to explore movements of the Earth’s crust and monitor volcanic and earthquake activity on a continental scale. The project is expected to last approximately 20 years.

The Earthscope project will place monitoring equipment in 49 states. It will have significant focus in Yellowstone and complement the existing monitoring that has taken place during the past 50 years. It has been said that “Earthscope is to the study of the earth as the Hubble Space telescope has been to the study of the stars.”
