Engineering, Design and Facilities Positions

Architect, GS-808

This series includes positions the duties of which involve professional architectural work which typically requires: (a) knowledge of architectural principles, theories, concepts, methods, and techniques; (b) a creative and artistic sense; and (c) an understanding and skill to use pertinent aspects of the construction industry, engineering and the physical sciences related to the design and construction of new or the improvement of existing buildings. Qualification requirements include education in architecture or related field that included 60 semester hours of course work in architecture or related disciplines of which at least (1) 30 semester hours were in architectural design and (2) 6 semester hours were in each of the following: structural technology, properties of materials and methods of construction, and environmental control systems.

Civil Engineer, GS-810

This series includes professional positions in the field of civil engineering, typically requiring application of general knowledge of the physical sciences and mathematics underlying engineering, and specialized knowledge of (a) mechanics of solids, particularly of soils, (b) hydraulics, (c) theory of structure, (d) strength of materials, (e) engineering geology, and (f) surveying. Qualification requirements include education that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.

Facility Manager, GS-1640

This series covers positions that involve managing the operation and maintenance of buildings, grounds, and other facilities. Such work requires: (1) administrative and management skills and abilities; and (2) broad technical knowledge of the operating capabilities and maintenance requirements of various kinds of physical plants and equipment. While positions in this series typically involve directing work performed by a variety of trades and labor employees and require specialized knowledge of such work, they do not have as their paramount qualification requirement an intensive knowledge of the specific trades skills utilized. Qualification requirements include experience that provided a knowledge of the practices and procedures related to property management, maintenance, materials requirements, and building operation and repair. This experience may have been gained in work such as budget or report preparation, maintenance of property and financial records, or trades or crafts work requiring technical knowledge or judgment.

Undergraduate Education with major study in engineering, industrial arts, property management, or business administration is qualifying.

Electronics Technician, GS-856

This series includes positions that require: (a) the knowledge of the techniques and theories characteristic of electronics such as a knowledge of basic electricity and electronic theory, algebra, and elementary physics; (b) the ability to apply that knowledge to duties involved in engineering functions such as design, development, evaluation, testing, installation and maintenance of electronic equipment; and (c) a knowledge of the capabilities, limitations, operations, design characteristics, and functional use of a variety of types and models of electronic equipment and systems. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:

--Work as a technician, instructor, inspector, or mechanic (civilian or military) that showed progression in theoretical and practical knowledge of electronic theory, and of the characteristics, function, operation, and capabilities of a variety of types of electronic equipment. This experience must have included the use of schematic diagrams, a variety of test equipment, and the application of appropriate electronic formulas involved in such duties as testing, troubleshooting, modifying, designing, calibrating, installing, maintaining, repairing, constructing, developing, and instructing on electronic equipment, or similar functions.

Successful completion of all the requirements for a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or electronics technology is qualifying.
