Job Title: Visitor Center Assistant

Location: Visitor centers throughout the park

Project Duration: Ongoing

Hours Per Week: Part-time or full-time (32 hours), Sun-Sat

Hours Per Month: Flexible


Description of Duties: Many people from all over the world come to Everglades National Park to learn about and explore its unique subtropical ecosystems. Often, their first stop is in one of the park visitor centers where they can learn about park activities. Become an integral part in shaping the knowledge, understanding and appreciation park visitors have for the Everglades by working in one of several park visitor centers and leading guided walks, boat tours or tram rides. Visitor Center duties include orienting visitors to recreational activities such as hiking, biking, fishing, bird watching and canoeing; sharing information about the park’s natural and cultural resources; answering visitor and phone inquiries; and opening and/or closing the visitor center. Interpretive duties include preparing and presenting guided walks, boat tours or tram rides and providing visitors with assistance and information while "roving" trails.


Benefits: Volunteers will have the opportunity to talk with people from all over the world. Two weeks of training on park habitats, wildlife, plant life and conservation issues will be provided. Volunteers will also gain experience in interpretation and visitor services. A uniform will be provided. Housing or RV sites are available for this position on a limited basis


Goal/Outcome of Position: To provide assistance and park information to a greater number of park visitors, thereby enhancing visitor understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of park resources. To assist park staff in protecting park resources.


Knowledge/Skills/Experience Desired: Enjoy working with the public. Have knowledge of, or willingness to learn about, park natural and cultural resources. Have ability to communicate effectively with people of all ages. Be able to remain calm and courteous during occasional hectic and emergency situations.
