El Malpais National Monument will host a Very Merry Meteor Shower star party on Friday, December 16th. Drop by Sandstone Bluffs Overlook any time between 6:30 pm and 8:00 pm to see the Geminids Meteor Shower, learn about the night sky and how you can help the National Park Service protect our dark skies in Northwest New Mexico. Look through telescopes at planets and stars and get a tour of the evening constellations.
This free event will take place at Sandstone Bluffs Overlook located approximately 12 miles south of I-40 on Highway 117. The star party will take place approximately 500 feet from the parking area at a small, natural observation area in the sandstone. The walk to the observation area is flat but the path is slightly narrow and uneven. Please bring a flashlight or headlamp with a red light setting if you have one, otherwise red light flashlights will be available. Dress warmly for a cold winter evening. Bring a portable lawn chair or blanket if you plan to stay to watch for meteors.
If the sky is mostly cloudy, this event will be canceled. Please check the El Malpais National Monument Facebook page for event updates.
