Join Acoma Sculptor Walter Torres for an inspirational talk on his newest sculpture “TriboElectricity” at El Malpais National Monument, at 1 pm on Saturday, March 11, 2023.

Walter studied sculpture at the Poeh Center in Pojoaque in Mexico where he was inspired by his instructor to create his own studio. His curiosity of volcanoes led him to research volcanic eruptions and how they create their own weather. This led Walter to create his newest sculpture, “TriboElectricity”. “I keep thinking about how powerful we as Native people can be. If we stand together, we can strike like lightning creating our own storm of “TriboElectricity”. Join him as he tells his story of discovery and bringing his vision to life in stone.

TriboElectricity is an ongoing installment at the Bureau of Land Management Visitor Center on Highway 117 outside of Grants, NM. You can watch Walter work on the sculpture on weekends.

This is the last installments of El Malpais National Monument monthly Winter Storytelling Series. Come out and listen to Walter at this free event on Saturday, March 11, 2023 from 1-2 pm, at the El Malpais Visitor Center located at 1900 East Santa Fe Avenue in Grants, New Mexico. For more information, contact the El Malpais Visitor Center at 505-876-2783 or visit www.nps.gov/elma.
