El Malpais National Monument Celebrates 30th Birthday with a Ranger Talk and Night Sky Viewing Grants, NM – El Malpais National Monument is hosting an educational program celebrating the 30th birthday of the monument. On December 16, 2017, there will be an indoor presentation discussing the history of the national park idea. This talk will be followed by outdoor telescope viewing to take in the night sky as a resource protected within this site.

This event will be held at the El Malpais Visitor Center. The talk begins at 6:00 pm, after the program visitors will leave the theater for telescope viewing. Participants are encouraged to wear warm clothing and bring red-lens covered flashlights. Individuals may bring their own telescopes or binoculars.

Telescope viewing events are also planned for January 20 and February 10, 2018. As these dates approach, more details will be released about each event.

Please keep in mind that using telescopes is weather dependent, and that this activity may be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. Please call 505-876-2783 for more information. The El Malpais Visitor Center is located at 1900 East Santa Fe Avenue, Grants, NM and is open 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Thursday – Monday. Visitors will find a Western National Parks Association park store in the visitor center. Purchases made in this store allow the National Park Service to purchase items that support park programs and events.
