Titus Canyon Road was severely damaged by flash flooding in August 2022, followed by additional flooding in 2023. National Park Service crews completed preliminary repairs, including moving boulders, filling drop-offs and grading the roadway, allowing the road to temporarily reopen this summer.
"We are pleased to begin work to improve Titus Canyon Road,” said Superintendent Mike Reynolds. “These improvements will help protect the road from future storm damage while preserving its historic character and providing reliable access to this special place.”
Work is expected to continue through May 2027 and will focus on improving drainage, reducing erosion and addressing areas vulnerable to storm damage. Improvements will include constructing rolling dips to direct stormwater away from the roadway and placing rock material at wash crossings and other areas where flowing water can undermine the road.
Near Red Pass, crews will stabilize an eroding section of roadway with steep drop-offs and rockfall hazards. Work will include removing loose rock and excavating portions of the slope above the road to improve stability and widen the roadway.
The project is designed to make Titus Canyon Road more resilient to future storms, improve safety and reduce damage from flooding.
