Death Valley, CA--Death Valley National Park (Park) is seeking public comments regarding a commercial proposal to install a telecommunications tower and provide cellular service near Stovepipe Wells Village. Commnet of Nevada LLC (Commnet) has submitted a right-of-way application to the National Park Service (NPS) to provide cellular telephone service to the residents and visitors to Stovepipe Wells Village.The NPS will consider this request in accordance with the Telecommunications Act of 1996, which authorizes but does not mandate that requests for new telecommunications sites be granted.The NPS is conducting an environmental assessment under the National Environmental Policy Act to analyze this proposal, and is seeking public input to help identify potential issues and alternatives. Commnet proposes to place a new 60-foot "Lite Site" tower on previously disturbed land at Stovepipe Wells. In addition, the proposal includes placing radio cabinets outside and adjacent to the tower. The NPS plans to examine the entire proposal in the context of all existing and reasonably foreseeable telecommunications facilities in the Stovepipe Wells area in order to accurately assess impacts to all associated resources.The assessment will serve as a long-term telecommunications plan for the Stovepipe Wells area. Comments on the proposal must be received no later than September 10, 2013.
