Fire activity has moderated due to recent rain and cooler weather and Denali National Park and Preserve officials have lifted the ban on open fires in the park’s backcountry areas. Open fires are now allowed in the 1980 park additions and in the preserve. They are not allowed in the wilderness portion of the park’s backcountry, which includes most of the original Mt. McKinley National Park. Open fires are allowed in established fire grates in the Riley Creek, Savage River, and Teklanika River Campgrounds.

The weather conditions have aided firefighter efforts in suppressing Interior fires, but higher winds are forecast. Visitors and residents are asked to assist the park’s fire managers by being careful with their use of fire in order to prevent additional fire starts.

Updated park information is posted on the web at Information can also be obtained by calling (907) 683-2294 from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. daily.
