The public is invited to participate in the activities and presentations being offered for the ninth annual Upper Susitna Earth Day Celebration. The 2009 festivities are taking place on Saturday, April 18, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Sheldon Community Arts Hanger in downtown Talkeetna.

The theme for the Earth Day celebration this year is "The Revolution Starts at Home." This locally sponsored and staffed event will feature a wide variety of exhibits and activities suitable for all ages. There will be food, crafts, art, short films, door prizes and lots of important consumer information. Free fair trade coffee will be available to those who bring their own cup, or can be purchased for $1.00 for those needing a paper cup. Food will be served on recycled plates and sharing of plates within families is encouraged. The documentary “Garbage” will be shown at 3:00 p.m.

The following items will be accepted for recycling at the event: cardboard, #1 and #2 plastics, aluminum, and tin cans. Unfortunately we won’t be able to accept glass and scrap metal.

Earth Day is made possible by the many volunteers, businesses, and organizations that support sustainable living, including Alaska Geographic and the National Park Service. Additional information is available from Colleen Coulon, Alaska Geographic Earth Day Coordinator, at (907) 733-2174 or Christie Anastasia, National Park Service Education Coordinator, at (907) 683-6440 or e-mail us.
