DENALI, Alaska — Denali National Park and Preserve has temporarily closed the Savage River Campground, located at Mile 13 of the Denali Park Road, due to ongoing wildlife activity in the area. All visitors with campground reservations for tonight have been relocated to other campgrounds in the park.

Park staff recently identified a deceased young moose near the campground. A cow moose has remained in the vicinity, and a grizzly bear has also been observed in the area. For the safety of visitors and wildlife, the campground is closed while park staff monitor conditions and assess public safety concerns.

The closure began at 10:30 a.m. today and will remain in effect until further notice. Park managers will continue evaluating conditions and will determine when the campground can safely reopen.

Visitors are reminded that wildlife can be unpredictable, especially near carcasses or food sources. Moose can be highly defensive, particularly cows protecting calves, and bears may aggressively defend carcasses. Visitors should remain alert, maintain safe distances from wildlife, and follow all instructions from park staff.

Anyone with existing reservations for Savage River Campground during the closure period should contact reservedenali.com or call 866-761-6629 for additional information regarding reservations and refunds.
