Fire management staff at Denali National Park and Preserve will burn a large pile of debris consisting of brush, tree branches, and other woody material on Monday, November 19. Ignition of the pile is planned to occur mid-morning. The pile is in the park’s sewage lagoon area, which is located on the north side of the Denali Park Road within the first ½ mile from the junction with the Parks Highway. The smoke may be visible from the Parks Highway. The burn pile is situated on a large rock and gravel pad that is free of vegetation. Fire management staff will be monitoring the burn and the weather so that the fire behavior remains within predetermined criteria. The burn is expected to last three days, but will be extinguished sooner if changes in weather or other factors threaten to alter fire behavior to unacceptable standards. The material being burned is from last year’s roadside brushing, new trail construction in the park’s entrance area, clearing or brushing of existing trails, and various other projects.
