Fire Restrictions Lifted at Black Canyon and Curecanti

News Release Date: September 17, 2026

MONTROSE, Colo. – Thanks to recent significant rainfall, the Stage 1 Fire Restriction Order for Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and Curecanti National Recreation Area will be lifted effective Friday, September 18, 2026, at 12:01 a.m.

Affected area: All lands within the boundaries of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and Curecanti National Recreation Area.

Visitor use of fire in the parks is regulated to protect natural resources and public safety. Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are implemented to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires during periods of very high fire danger by decreasing potential ignition sources.

Though fire restrictions are rescinded, visitors are encouraged to remain vigilant of wildfire risks. Before your visit, please check current fire regulations and weather conditions, and make sure to fully extinguish campfires until they are cold to touch. Consider using propane stoves as a safer alternative and always pack out cigarette butts to prevent littering and accidental fires.
