Activity 2: Plants


Plants that live in harsh places like Craters of the Moon have special adaptations to help them survive and grow! Can you match each plant to its perfect habitat?
 
A short, green pine tree with windswept branches clings to volcanic rock

Limber Pine:

I grow in groves on shady north facing slopes.
 
short, round, white/yellow and pink flowers grow out of black volcanic rock

Dwarf Buckwheat:

I am a small pom-pom flower that grows on cinder slopes at Craters of the Moon, and nowhere else on earth!
 
tiny, green lichen grows close to the surface of black volcanic rock

Lichen:

I look like a plant, but I'm actually a combination of an algae and a fungus! At Craters, I mostly grow on rocks.
 
a light green shrub with many long, thin leaves that grow upward

Sagebrush:

I grow in areas with deep soil where I can reach moisture deep below the ground.
