The fire danger level within Crater Lake National Park has dropped from extreme to moderate as a result of recent moisture and predicted cooler temperatures. Effective immediately, the Stage 1 fire restrictions implemented on July 31, 2016, are rescinded. To ensure public safety and to provide the highest degree of protection to park resources, the following regulatory provisions apply to fires within Crater Lake National Park.
Campfires
The lighting or maintaining of fires is generally prohibited, except as provided for in the following designated areas or receptacles, and under the conditions noted:
- Mazama Campground and Lost Creek Campground, in grills or grates provided in designated campsites
- Lightning Springs campground within established fire rings
- Rim Village Picnic Area, in grills or grates provided in designated picnic sites
- Within National Park Service or concession residential areas, by residents and their guests, within grills and/or fire grates that fully contain the fire
- In the backcountry beyond one mile from any maintained road, except that fires are prohibited in the following backcountry areas:
a. Within 1/4 mile of Boundary Springs
b. Within 1/4 mile of Thousand Springs
c. Within 1/4 mile of Sphagnum Bog
d. Between Rim Drive and Crater Lake
e. Wizard Island
f. Phantom Ship Island
g. Within 100 feet of any meadow (grassland)
h. Within 100 feet of any spring, flowing stream, river, or body of water
i. At elevations above 6900 feet
- All visual evidence of fires must be removed once extinguished, except in designated campsites.
Fireworks
Fireworks are prohibited in the park at all times.
These restrictions are implemented pursuant to the authority described in 36 Code of Federal Regulations 1.5(a)(2), 2.13(c) and 2.21(a). Our goal is voluntary compliance;however, persons who fail to comply with these restrictions may be cited or arrested. Thank you for your cooperation.
