Crater Lake, OR - The north entrance to Crater Lake National Park will reopen on Friday, August 28, 2015. Burn out operations related to the Crescent Fire were successful and have established a strong fire line to the north and east along Highway 138 and the park's North Entrance Road. Smoke may persist and further temporary closures may be necessary depending on fire behavior or suppression actions. The Pacific Crest Trail from the park's north boundary to the junction with Lightning Springs Trail remains closed for the safety of hikers until all danger from spotting has passed. The Boundary Springs Trail, Bald Crater Loop Trail, and Bert Creek Trail also remain closed at this time. The fire is currently 40 percent contained. Firefighters are poised to take advantage of favorable weather conditions in the coming days to extend lines on the western and southern sides of the fire. Crews are also taking advantage of existing features and road systems both inside and outside the park to improve containment, and will continue looking for spotting outside of containment lines and mopping up any hot spots along Highway 230, Highway 138 and the North Park Entrance Road. All park roads and facilities are open. Smoke within the park has been intermittent and limited depending on wind direction. Viewing conditions can be variable throughout the day and range from hazy to clear. Please visit Crater Lake's website, www.nps.gov/crla, for updated information or to view real time conditions from the park's webcams. |
