HOPKINS, SC -- Park rangers from Congaree National Park will be conducting a small prescribed burn tomorrow, Thursday, March 14, weather and conditions permitting.The fire will be conducted in the Harry Hampton Southwest Unit along the entranceroad near the Harry Hampton Visitor Center, and will encompass approximately 3.8 acres. The intended goal of this prescribed fire is to help with fuel reduction and habitat restoration, in accordance with the park's fire management plan.
Precautions have been taken to minimize impacts and ensure the safety of park visitors. Portions of the Longleaf Trail and Firefly Trail will be closed to foot traffic, as well as the picnic shelter and the first visitor center parking lot. Additionally, smoke may drift over the park entrance road and trails, and drivers should use caution as fire crews and equipment will be operating along the park entrance road. Recreational access to other park trails, including the Boardwalk, and facilities will remain open.
