Congaree National Park is seeking a dynamic teacher to work as a uniformed park ranger as part of the Teacher-Ranger-Teacher (TRT) program this summer. The teacher will assist with outreach efforts, develop lesson plans, and take on projects. They will then bring park resources into their classroom by developing and presenting curriculum-based lesson plans that draw on their summer's experience. The TRT will have the opportunity to participate in the park's annual living history event, Congaree Campfire Chronicles, in November. The TRT will also be tasked with establishing a club at their school, Students Teaching About Monumental Park Sites (STAMPS), and will have the opportunity to connect with students and educators in other STAMPS clubs across the national park system. The goal of STAMPS is to encourage students to share their park experience with their peers. Park rangers will work closely with the selected teacher to ensure the success of the STAMPS. The TRT program is a nationwide effort designed to offer teachers a professional development opportunity working as a national park ranger. During this eight-week position [June-August, 2012; dates flexible], the selected teacher will also perform traditional ranger duties, such as nature walks, informal interpretation on park trails and staffing the Harry Hampton Visitor Center. The selected teacher will receive training, a uniform, and a stipend. An international biosphere reserve and federally-designated Wilderness area, Congaree National Park serves as a classroom and laboratory for visitors, students, and scientists from around the world. Visitors can explore 26 miles of hiking trails, 2.5 miles of boardwalk, a wilderness canoe trail, campground, and visitor center, each providing unique experiences. TRT program applications can be found online. The deadline to apply is April 25, 2012. |
