Due to Parkway closures and current detours as a result of the Colonial Parkway Rehabilitation project, the remaining Parkway Recreation Days (Rec Days) at Colonial National Historical Park have been cancelled. They were originally scheduled for September 30, October 1 and November 18-19, 2023.Colonial National Historical Park has held “Rec Days” since 2020 by temporarily closing the Parkway to motor vehicle traffic, so that pedestrians and bicyclists could enjoy its use along the scenic James River. However, current construction closures, construction detours and construction traffic make closures for Rec Day potentially unsafe to park visitors. The park will schedule future Parkway Rec Days as soon as is practical, dependent upon the progress of construction.
In March 2023, Colonial National Historical Park received $122.8 million through the Great American Outdoors Act Legacy Restoration Fund for the Colonial Parkway Rehabilitation project. Working in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration, this project will rehabilitate and extend the life of about 10.3 miles of the Colonial Parkway. Repairs will be made to nearly all the components in the project sections, including the road surface, eleven bridges, the Williamsburg Tunnel, drainage structures, guardrails and signage. The project is expected to be completed in time for the nation’s 250th anniversary of independence in 2026.
