Traffic Delays Scheduled for ¼ Mile Section Along Upper Rim Rock Drive in Colorado National Monument Wednesday, Sept. 21 - Friday, Sept. 23

On Wednesday, September 21 through Friday, September 23 the Federal Highway Administration will be conducting rock scaling and rockfall removal along a ¼ mile section of Rim Rock Drive between Artist Point and Highlands View scenic overlooks. The rock scaling is preventative maintenance to reduce the risk of future rockfall. The rockfall removal portion of the project will include removing a 25 ton boulder from the shoulder of the roadway that fell during a rockslide that occurred in late August. Crews will be scaling by hand and also using airbags inflated within cracks to bring down rock material. All materials will be hauled away to a safe staging area.

Because of the unpredictable nature of rock scaling include the size and material that may be brought down; motorists and bicyclists should plan for 10 to 15 minute delays. Crews will hold traffic while bringing rocks down and clearing debris from the roadway. There will then be single lane, alternating traffic through the work area. The project work hours will be 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily.

Motorcyclists and bicyclists should expect rough and sandy road conditions in the work zone.

Glade Park residents traveling from 16 1/2 Road to and from the West Entrance Station are advised to use DS Road to the East Entrance Station to avoid these traffic delays. The National Park Service and Federal Highway Administration are committed to minimizing impacts to visitors and community members.

The public is invited to visit the park's website regularly at www.nps.gov/colm for the latest updates and changes or call the park offices at 970-858-3617 ext. 300.

Thank you for your patience.
