In response to a recent road safety study conducted along Rim Rock Drive, by the Federal Highway Administration, Colorado National Monument will install speed humps on Rim Rock Drive at east and west entrances. Traffic engineers expressed concern for public and employee safety near the entrance stations and recommended that speed humps be installed as an effective measure to both increase safety and reduce speeding. Speed humps are designed to slow traffic in areas where cars, trucks, motorcycles and bicycles often exceed the speed limit. Unlike speed bumps, speed humps are a more gradual raised section on the pavement intended to slow traffic to 10 mph at both entrances. During the speed hump installation, park visitors and Glade Park residents can expect 5 minute traffic delays through the work zone. Installation is scheduled on the following dates and locations: East Entrance Station: Wednesday, July 25.Visitors can expect 5 minute traffic delays through the work zone during the hours of 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. To avoid traffic delays, Glade Park residents and visitors traveling between DS Road and the East Entrance Station are advised to use Little Park Road. West Entrance Station: Thursday, July 26 and Friday, July 27. Visitors can expect 5 minute traffic delays through the work zone during the hours of 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on both days. Excessive speed and reckless driving are common occurrences at both entrances. Recently, a motorist sped through the east entrance, drove off the road and rolled down an embankment, seriously injuring the car's occupants.
