Fatal Crash at Colorado National Monument

Fruita, CO – At approximately 11:45 a.m. on January 11th rangers were notified of a motor vehicle crash that occurred on the east hill of Colorado National Monument. The reporting party was on foot when they located the wreckage, which was not easily visible from the roadway. A preliminary investigation indicates the crash may have occurred the night of January 10.

The driver was a 30-year-old male and the only occupant of the vehicle. He was found deceased at the scene. Evidence at the scene suggests excessive speed was a factor. There is no indication at this time that any other vehicles were involved. 

The vehicle will be removed from the crash location on January 12th. The operation will require a single-lane road closure, and drivers may experience brief delays beginning at 9 a.m.

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office will determine cause and manner of death, as well as release the identity of the deceased once next of kin is notified.
