Colorado National Monument’s visitor center and bookstore are now temporarily located in a mobile visitor center in the parking lot adjacent to the main visitor center. This will allow for renovations in the attic of the main visitor center. The renovation project includes removing the building’s insulation, sealing holes in the building to prevent pest and rodent infestations, adding electrical capacity and conduit, and reinsulating the attic with energy efficient insulation. This work is being accomplished through a contract awarded to Ridgeway Valley Enterprises of Montrose, CO. The mobile visitor center opened to the public on Monday, November 2, and will remain open 7 days a week from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. The monument hopes to reopen the main visitor center and bookstore by November 24, in time for the busy Thanksgiving weekend. Funds generated by user fees collected at the entrance stations are being used to accomplish this project. User fees provide Colorado National Monument with critical project funding that is used to directly benefit the public by improving the condition of park facilities and services, reducing the park's maintenance backlog, and enhancing the condition of natural and cultural resources.
