On Saturday afternoon, August 22, Stanley Dodson, age 65, of Madison, Wisconsin, lost control of his bike while riding down the east hill of Rim Rock Drive, approximately 1 mile from the monument's east entrance station. Two bicyclists riding up the hill observed Mr. Dodson traveling downhill at about 25 mph before he lost control and impacted the pavement. The bicyclists called 911 and a Grand Junction Fire Department ambulance and a National Park Service ranger immediately responded to the accident scene. Mr. Dodson was transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction. On Sunday afternoon, August 23, Mr. Dodson passed away. The staff of Colorado National Monument extends their heartfelt condolences to Mr. Dodson’s family. This marks the first time a serious bicycling accident has resulted in a bicyclist fatality in the history of the monument. |
