WILBERFORCE – Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument is proud to announce the reopening of the historic Young family home on Monday, April 15, 2024 after completing an over two year $3.1 million dollar restoration. The construction process has restored the house back to its period of significance when Brigadier General Charles Young and his family occupied it in the early to mid-1900s.“We’re very excited to announce the reopening. It’s been over two years since we closed the doors to the public and Monday, April 15th marks a significant day in park history. We think the public will be very pleased with the results, as are we. The restoration has updated several areas of the house that will allow us to provide enhanced visitor services,” said Acting Superintendent Andy Danneker.
Nearly every square inch of the house has been restored during the home’s closure, inside and outside. In addition to enhanced visitor services in the home, staff will also reap the benefits of new office spaces allowing for staff to take care of essential operational duties and program research. The home is now accessible to those with mobility impairments, as well. An elevator and new entrance ramps to enter the home are a few of the new accessibility features that have been added.
The Brigadier General Charles Young home reopens to the public at 9:00 AM on Monday morning, April 15th. Visitor hours for the home will be 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, seven days per week. Park grounds are open every day, from sunrise to sunset. There is no fee for entrance to the home.
Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument is the nation’s 401st National Park Service site. The park was established in 2013 to preserve the Charles Young family home and 60 acres of farmland. Brigadier General Charles Young was the third African American graduate of West Point and the highest ranking African American officer in the U.S. Army up until his untimely death in 1922. The park also proudly tells the story of the famed African American Army soldiers known as the Buffalo Soldiers. Learn more on the park’s website.
