National Park Service/E. Cowan Celebrate the mules of C&O Canal, past and present!Mules have played an important role in the history of the canal. During the 19th and 20th centuries, mules pulled boats along the canal between Georgetown and Cumberland. They were also used to construct the canal, and more recently, the park uses mules to teach visitors about their contributions to the park and nation's histories.
