Williamsport, Md.- A high water event in the Potomac River has caused the water to crest the Chesapeake and Ohio National Historical Park (C&O Canal) towpath in several locations along the canal from McMahon’s Mill (MM 88.1) to Burnside House (MM 89.5).  Please avoid the towpath in these areas. Visitors seeking to bypass the closed area should access the towpath going east to Big Slackwater (MM 84.40) and going west at Cushwa Basin (MM 97.72). Through bikers and hikers should follow the marked bypass at Avis Mill Rd.

Thank you for your patience during this public safety closure.
