Hancock, MD - As Aaron Siskind once said “Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever….It remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.” Steve Dean, photographer extraordinaire for the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, will be hosting a photography talk and walk on July 29th from 10 am -12 pm. The program will begin at the Bowles House Visitor Center in Hancock, Maryland.

Techniques discussed will include: exposure settings for the various lighting situations on the canal, focusing and depth of field, image processing, and a few canal photo suggestions that participants can consider for future canal outings. The discussion will be followed by a walk to culvert 179 (two miles round trip). Opportunities for photographing two locks and some excellent towpath perspectives will be provided along the walk.

Participants are encouraged to submit questions in advance and to provide the make and model of the camera they use to Steve at: cando.culverts@comcast.net. All camera types are welcome- from iPhones to single lens reflex cameras; participants without a camera are also welcome! Steve will be available at the Bowles House Visitor Center for an hour before the program for anyone who wants to show up early for some preliminary questions or discussions.

The program is free and space is limited to the first 12 guests. If you would like to attend this event, please RSVP with your name and how many will be in your party. For more information or to RSVP, please contact Kelsey Smith, Assistant Volunteer Coordinator, at kelsey_smith@nps.gov. The Bowles House is located at 439 East Main Street, Hancock, MD 21750.
