Movement matters! Start the New Year and a new century for the NPS with a First Day Hike adventure on Sunday, January 1st, 2017. This year, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park (C&O) will sponsor two First Day Hikes. First Day Hikes are an exciting way we spotlight our public lands and encourage people to get into nature.

Begin the New Year with one of four self-guided hikes at Great Falls in Potomac, Maryland, or a self-guided towpath hike near Cushwa Basin in Williamsport, Maryland. Instructions on how to participate in the First Day Hike events at Williamsport and Potomac will be posted at the Cushwa Basin and Great Falls Tavern visitor centers.

The C&O has #FirstDayHike questions for you to ponder along the route and share your thoughts. Questions can be found along the hiking routes. A small prize is awarded for all hikers who participate. First Day Hikers at Great Falls can submit their answers at the visitor center in exchange for a prize and those joining in at Williamsport can submit their address with their answers and a prize will be mailed to them. You may also submit your answers on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook by tagging your pictures and posts with both the hashtags #FirstDayHike and #FirstDayCOCanal.
