Greater Washington DC Area, MD, PA, VA, WV -Stretching 184.5 miles from the hustle and bustle of Georgetown near Washington DC to the mountainous region of Western Maryland, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park offers visitors endless opportunities to explore history, experience nature and enjoy recreation! During National Park Week, April 21-29, all 397 national parks across the United States offer free admission to park visitors. Whether it's your first time to the C&O Canal or you are a regular visitor, a variety of year-round activities and programs appeal to all ages and interests. In addition to the regular favorites, hiking, biking, canoeing, and fishing, the spring and summer will bring new additions to our cadre of activities for visitors to enjoy. Plans to restore historic canal operations and enhance visitor experiences at the park are underway. Starting in June, visitors can join park staff on a replica canal launch boat ride along the C&O Canal waterway in Georgetown and Williamsport. For a small fee in Georgetown visitors can step back in history and experience life along on the canal. The Williamsport program will not charge a fee during this season as the program is still developing to include an expanded section of re-watered canal. However, visitors will still enjoy a great interpretive tour featuring numerous historic canal structures. "These small battery powered vessels will provide visitors with new opportunities to explore the park's rich historic and natural resources" Park Superintendent Kevin Brandt said. "They will provide even more of our visitors with an on-the-water experience." In addition to expanding visitor services and interpretive programs already offered in the park, park staff hopes the replica canal launch boats will establish and nourish partnerships with communities along the canal, including new opportunities from volunteering, school programs, and boosting local tourism.
