Hagerstown, MD - Fifty volunteers at the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park (C&O Canal) qualified for the National Park Service’s Centennial Challenge Coin. Each of these dedicated volunteers contributed at least 201.6 hours to support the Park in 2016. Park staff have been awarding the coins at special events or mailing them out to far-flung volunteers. One celebration event was held Friday, February 17 at the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center. Twenty volunteers were recognized and presented Centennial Challenge Coins by the Park’s Chief of Interpretation, Education and Volunteers Catherine Bragaw, Palisades District Interpreter Pete Peterson, Volunteer Coordinator Emily Hewitt, and Park Ranger Joshua Nolen.

Volunteers at the C&O Canal engage in a variety of duties including Bike Patrol volunteers in their neon vests to the rarely-seen Headquarters volunteers (in the library and the permits office). Regardless of their duties all volunteers are extremely valuable to the Park! Thank you for your time and energy!
