C and O Canal NHP Issues a Finding of No Significant Impact FONSI for Restoration of Canal Operations at Hancock Md

Washington County, Md. –The National Park Service, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, is issuing a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for Restoration of Canal Operations at Hancock, Maryland.

This decision document completes the initial planning and compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act and Historic Preservation Act.As funding becomes available the park will be able to implement the Preferred Alternative identified in the project's Environmental Assessment.Funding is not immediately available to implement elements of the project.The National Park Service plans to partner with the Town of Hancock and other stakeholders to seek appropriate sources of funding.

Elements of the plan identified in the Preferred Alternative include additional rewatering of the canal prism;The project will provide visitors with a better understanding of the C&O Canal and its operations in the late 1800's near Hancock, MD.
