Willcox, AZ – April 18, 2024 is the Centennial 100 year Commemoration of the establishment of Chiricahua National Monument. Throughout 2024, each month will feature a special event or program that highlights the months national dedication and its relevance to Chiricahua's history. February is Black History month, which will feature the Buffalo Soldiers in Chiricahua and their stories.On Saturday, February 17th and 18th, at 2:00pm, the 60 minute presentation will be held at Chiricahua National Monument in the Faraway Ranch Historic District by Guest Speaker Sharon Kennedy.
On the grounds of the Faraway Ranch Historic Home, an event tent for the presentation will host the speaker and attendees, with parking and restrooms available at the Faraway Ranch Parking area, overflow parking is available. No registration required. Currently, the Faraway Ranch historic home is undergoing extensive renovation, and the interior of the home will not be open for the event.
The presentation will feature: Buffalo Soldiers in Bonita Canyon: Who They Were and Who They Mourned--Slain President Garfield, regarding the Buffalo Soldiers Monument to President Garfield, constructed and dedicated in 1885. In the Fall of 1885, Troop H of the Tenth Cavalry arrived in Bonita Canyon and stayed seven months. Their purpose was to guard surrounding waterholes from use by Geronimo's people and horses if they surreptitiously tried to return from the Sierra Madres in Mexico. This is the story of those Buffalo Soldiers in this canyon.
Special Guest Speaker Sharon Kennedy is an independent researcher, writer, and published author with a keen interest in African-American History. Her forthcoming book about the Buffalo Soldiers in Bonita Canyon will be published in June by an independent press, Buckskin Books.
