Chattanooga, TN: Rangers from Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park and educators from the Chattanooga Arboretum and Nature Center have once again partnered to provide the public a unique experience at the nation's oldest military park. On Saturday, May 4 at 9:00 a.m. take a hike through a portion of the Lookout Mountain Battlefield and learn not only the historical aspects of the battle, but the transformative beauty of this natural area. This approximately two hour program will begin at the Cravens House. The Battle of Lookout Mountain has been poetically nicknamed "The Battle Above the Clouds." The fog that rolled in and out on the slopes throughout the day and the rock outcrops that dot the mountain in many places shielded the Union troops as they advanced and struck the outnumbered Confederates defending the "Gibraltar of Chattanooga" in this historic battle. Nature, as it turns out, greatly shaped how this battle was fought and decided. Please wear comfortable, supportive footwear and clothing appropriate to the weather for this approximate two mile hike. This program will take place rain or shine. Proper hydration is recommended. |
