Battle Above the Clouds: The Confederate Army of Tennessee surrounded the Union Army of the Cumberland and laid siege in Chattanooga. The Confederates held the high ground at Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge. However they could not completely seal off Chattanooga from the north. Union reinforcements arrived and Ulysses S. Grant took command of the Union Army. The Union Army was able to resupply via the “cracker line” and break the Confederate stronghold. The Battle of Lookout Mountain, one of the most significant battles of the Civil War, ensued and helped to break the siege.
