During the Civil War, soldiers were often ordered to "march to the sound of the guns" as they moved into battle. However, the Union army needed a new approach when planning to open a much needed supply line to the beleaguered and starving army in Chattanooga. Prior to the attack on October 27, 1863, Union forces planned the operation in detail, utilizing the quiet and darkness of night to execute a successful assault that opened "The Cracker Line." Historian Jim Ogden examines these successful operations on Moccasin Bend during this special program.
As always, comfortable, supportive footwear, appropriate clothing for the weather and water are recommended. For more information about programs at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, contact the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center at (706) 866-9241 or the Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center at (423) 821-7786.
