Chattanooga's John Brown: His Life and Legacy

Fort Oglethorpe, GA: Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to participate in a free program exploring the life of John Brown on Saturday, May 21, at 2 pm along the Brown's Ferry Federal Road Trail on Moccasin Bend.This 90 minute, 1.2 mile walking tour begins at the trailhead near 700 Moccasin Bend Road, Chattanooga, TN 37405. Special Event signs will be posted off West Manufacturer's Road to assist visitors in finding the program location.

When a person hears the name John Brown, it is likely their thoughts are flooded with images of his raid on Harper's Ferry. However, did you know there was a Cherokee named John Brown who owned and operated a tavern and ferry just outside Chattanooga? Although his story is not as widely circulated as the more famous abolitionist, Chattanooga's John Brown was a successful entrepreneur with a bit of a dark side. This program will explore his life and legacy in the local community.
