Sandy Springs, GA – In anticipation of the Fourth of July holiday and increased traffic on the river and park grounds, the park superintendent at Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (NRA) wants to remind visitors of the important role they play in safe and memorable visits to the park. This year, in addition to water safety precautions, park visitors are reminded to follow Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance to help people recreating in parks and open spaces prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
“Regardless of whether visitors are tubing, paddling, fishing, hiking or playing along the 48 miles of river, preparation and safety is key,” said Acting Superintendent Ann Honious. “We expect very high visitation this holiday weekend, and the parking areas and river access will be very crowded. In addition to the usual safety precautions, we are encouraging visitors to maintain social distancing.” Visitors are also asked to Recreate Responsibly and pack essential items like water, face coverings and hand sanitizer. The following tips are helpful to keep in mind:
- Know before you go. Visit www.nps.gov/chat for current park conditions, including river flow rates, weather forecast, availability of restrooms and other facilities. Make a plan, follow the 10 Essentials, and if you are sick, stay home.
- Keep it close. Follow the state and county orders governing the open status of the area you’re considering visiting.
- Keep your distance. Recreate with the people in your household. Give others plenty of room at a boat launch or in a parking lot. Follow the CDC social distancing guidelines for staying six feet away from others. Be prepared to cover your nose and mouth if you’re near others.
- Know your limits. Postpone challenging hikes or trying new activities while first responders, parks, and communities continue to concentrate on responding to the pandemic.
- Keep it with you. If you brought it, take it with you. Follow Leave No Trace principles.
- Keep it inclusive. Be an active part of making our nation’s parks and public lands safe and welcoming for all identities and abilities.
Chattahoochee River NRA historically welcomes over 300,000 visitors during the month of July. The health and safety of those who visit and work in national parks continues to be paramount, which is why we ask visitors to be our partner in adopting safe visitation practices. Additional information and park updates are also available on the park’s social media page.
