SANDY SPRINGS, Ga.—Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (park) is extending a partial closure of the Chattahoochee River today from Johnson Ferry to the East Palisades-Whitewater Creek Unit due to elevated levels of E. coli contamination, which poses risks to health. This precautionary measure comes at the recommendation of public health professionals. The Chattahoochee River is closed from Chattahoochee Nature Center (river mile 315.5) to Whitewater Creek (river mile 304.5).

The Park is actively working with Chattahoochee Riverkeeper and local municipalities to address the ongoing sewage spill near Willeo Creek Park. The spill has been reported to the Georgia-Environmental Protection Division (GA-EPD). Water quality tests received on July 1st reveal bacteria levels that exceed the Environmental Protection Agency recommended limits for recreation. The Park recommends caution when recreating downstream from the closure, including areas like Paces Mill.

Elevated E. coli levels can lead to various health concerns. Common symptoms of E. coli infection include diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and occasionally, fever. In severe cases, E. coli infection can lead to serious health complications, especially in vulnerable populations, such as children, the elderly, or individuals with weakened immune systems. It is crucial for individuals to avoid direct contact with the affected areas until further notice.

The park and Chattahoochee Riverkeeper will continue to monitor and test water quality. Additional closures may be implemented if E. coli levels reach dangerous levels in other parts of the river. Current information about the closure status will be available at www.nps.gov/CHAT. The hiking trails, picnic shelters and Hewlett Lodge visitor center remain open.
