What to Expect on your Field Trip to Cedar Breaks

Field trips at Cedar Breaks National Monument offer students an immersive, hands-on experience in nature. Our goal is to provide an engaging and educational environment, while ensuring the safety of your students, other park visitors, and the natural resources we protect. To create the best possible experience, we've designed field trips to include rotating stations that allow for smaller group sizes and focused learning activities.

Each field trip can accommodate up to 60 students, with one chaperone for every 10 students, at minimum. To help manage the groups, students will rotate through three designated stations, each offering a different interactive activity related to the park's unique natural and cultural features. These stations will be located within the Point Supreme area and include the Point Supreme Overlook, the Visitor Center back patio, and the first 0.1-mile of the Sunset Trail. This structure helps maintain the safety of the students while ensuring that all groups have a meaningful experience. A ranger will be stationed at each location, and groups will reconvene at the Picnic Area for a break.

A typical field trip may look something like this:

  • Arrival and Introduction: Upon arrival, students will have time to use the restrooms and settle in at the Visitor Center back patio area. After a brief introduction to Cedar Breaks, we’ll go over safety information and provide an overview of the day’s activities.

  • Rotating Stations: Students will visit each station, where they will complete an interactive activity. The duration at each station will be about 20 minutes, with time to move between stations and regroup.

  • Lunch and Wrap-Up: After the field trip activities, students will have time to enjoy a packed lunch at the Picnic Area, followed by a wrap-up session where they can participate in the Junior Ranger Oath and reflect on their experiences.

  • Departure: After lunch and clean-up, students will board their buses and head home, having had a day full of hands-on learning and adventure.

We strive to create a positive and productive environment for all visitors, so please know that these guidelines are in place to ensure your students get the most out of their visit while also respecting other park guests. If you have specific ideas or suggestions for how you would like the field trip to unfold, feel free to reach out to us—we’re happy to collaborate and customize your visit to suit your educational goals.

Scheduling a Field Trip at Cedar Breaks

Our current field trip season runs from August 1 through October 9, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, with start times between 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM.

  1. Complete and submit the Cedar Breaks Education Reservation Request Form, available below. This form allows us to collect more detailed information about your visit and will help in determining if an Academic Fee Waiver is applicable. Using the online scheduling form ensures that we can manage group sizes effectively. It also helps us allocate our ranger-led activities appropriately, based on your group’s needs. We recommend booking your field trip at least 4 weeks in advance to ensure availability.
  2. After submitting a request, keep an eye on your inbox (and spam folder, just in case!) for an email from CedarBreaksInfo@nps.gov. This email will contain important details for confirming your reservation, as well as any necessary next steps.

To ensure we can best accomodate your group, please be prepared to share any specific educational goals or topics you’d like to focus on during your trip. We are happy to work with you to make your field trip to Cedar Breaks an enriching experience, so feel free to reach out if you have any questions or special requests!
