Preservation of historic places is a key element in historic interpretation and to understanding our nations past. The National Park Service and its partners work to protect battlefields of the Shenandoah Valley. The American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP), a program of the National Park Service, offers technical help and grants to those who want to preserve historic battlefields and related sites. Groups like the American Battlefield Trust and the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation have saved countless acres of land and historic structures in the Shenandoah Valley and throughout the United States.
