Overnight facilities in Catoctin Mountain Park will close temporarily beginning at 12:00 noon on August 27. The closure is being enacted to assure the safety and protection of park visitors from the effects of high winds and potentially damaging rain anticipated when Hurricane Irene passes over the area. The facilities will remain closed until 12:00 noon on Monday, August 29. The closure affects Owens Creek Campground, the Adirondack shelters, the Poplar Grove Youth Tenting Area, Camp Round Meadow, Camp Greentop and Camp Misty Mount. The Military Appreciation Day scheduled for Saturday, August 27 is cancelled. Look for future notices for this event to be rescheduled Park trails will remain open for day use during the weather emergency. However, hikers accept the inherent risks associated with hiking during extreme weather, including falling trees and unstable surfaces. Please consider the risks before hiking. Hikers are encouraged to postpone trail exploration until the weather has stabilized. The park Visitor Center will remain open during regular hours throughout the weather emergency. Catoctin Mountain Park is one of 394 units administered by the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. The park Visitor Center, located on State Route 77 three miles west of Thurmont, Maryland, is open daily from 10:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., and from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
