Ranger-Led Field Trips

Ranger-led field trips are offered throughout the school year in the park. Field trip options include ranger-led tours of the grounds and outbuildings of Oakland Plantation and Magnolia Plantation. Each tour lasts approximately 45–60 minutes. To add additional components such as a self-guided tour of the main house at Oakland, your visit may need to be longer.

These guided tours introduce students to the park’s history, highlighting significant people, places, and stories. Tours are led by park rangers and are designed to be engaging and age-appropriate.

Each ranger-led tour is limited to 20 students. Groups with more than 20 students must register for additional tours. Please plan for a recommended chaperone-to-student ratio of approximately 1:7. Depending on staffing availability, ranger-led tours may be requested for Wednesday through Friday from 9:30 am - 3:00 pm.

To book your program email our education office.

Transportation Funding

If you need assistance for your school group to travel to the park, up to $350 in transportation grants may be available through the Cane River National Heritage Area. Contact us at 318-352-0383 to learn more about transportation grants.

Self-Guided Field Trip

Consider organizing your own class field trip to the park! There are no limits on class size for self-guided tours. Groups are welcome to explore the site on their own during regular hours.

Most field trips to Cane River Creole are facilitated by educators, chaperones, and parents. On this page you will find tools and resources to plan field trips for all grades and learning levels. Questions about field trips can be emailed to the Education office.

Planning a Field Trip

The first step in planning your field trip is to determine how much time you want to spend at the site. Most groups spend 2-3 hours at the park. The majority of Oakland Plantation and Magnolia Plantation are self-guided. There is no entrance fee at Cane River Creole.
